This year the composition department have been collaborating with the double bass department to create five very contrasting works for bass ensembles, ranging from 3 to 12 players.
The composers have very divergent approaches: Kasper de Oude has written a work for table-top contrabass with transducers and live electronics, Felix Cheung’s piece is a work of carefully choreographed music theatre, involving the relationship of the player to his or her instrument, Filip Sternal’s piece for 12 basses tries to evoke the sound of a beehive, Eva Beunk’s work deals with the narrative of friendship and Izak de Dreu has written a consort-like work which has a concern for space.
The project is the guided by double bassist Quirijn van Regteren Altena, who as a soloist and long time member of the Schönberg Ensemble, has premiered countless contemporary works, and from the composition perspective by Yannis Kyriakides.
